Lebanon on U.N. Security Council

The United Nations announced today, Oct. 15, that politically divided Lebanon is one five new countries being added to the  the U.N. Security Council.

According to a U.N. press release, Lebanon was selected  'in a move diplomats hoped would help strengthen their fragile institutions."

So a national largely controlled by a terrorist group — Hezbollah — can sit on the Security Council, while Israel remains the only nation in the world body that cannot. What is wrong with this picture?

House passes Iran sanctions legislation

The House passed The Iran Sanctions Enabling Act yesterday, allowing state and local governments to divest from companies with ties to the Iranian energy sector. The Pennsylvania state legislature and local governments around Pittsburgh are looking at legislation to do just that, and this bill would help those efforts.

From JTA:

"The legislation allows for state and local governments to divest from companies that invest in Iran's petroleum and natural gas industries or do business with Iran's nuclear industry, It also provides for divestment from any company providing tankers or any product used to construct or maintain pipelines that transport Iranian oil or liquefied natural gas, as well as any financial institution that offers a $20 million line of credit to anyone investing in Iran's energy sector. The bill would protect fund managers who divest from such companies from possible lawsuits."
