UJF gives $20,000 to resettlement of Yemeni Jews in US and Israel

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday on a secret US operation to relocate Yemeni Jews in new homes in the US, mainly in Monsey, N.Y. While none of the refugees have been brought to Pittsburgh, the United Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh donated $20,000 to the resettlement effort. The Jewish Federations of North America raised around $750,000 in total. The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society handled the resettlement.

From the article:

In all, about 60 Yemeni Jews have resettled in the U.S. since July; officials say another 100 could still come. There were an estimated 350 in Yemen before the operation began. Some of the remainder may go to Israel and some will stay behind, most in a government enclave.

Yemen is one of the oldest diaspora communities in the world — the article traces the Jews of Yemen back 2,500 year, to the days of King Solomon. The Jews began facing harassment around the time of the creation of the State of Israel. "Operation Magic Carpet" airlifted around 49,000 Yemeni Jews to Israel in 1949 and 1950.
