Singing ABBA in the Negev desert

We’ve got a story in the paper this week about a group of women who represented Pittsburgh on a Israeli jeep expedition last year called Desert Queen. Started in 1999, the event sends Israeli women on adventures in remote deserts around the world, from Turkey to Thailand. But for the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel, Desert Queen 2008 brought the event home for the first time, and asked Diaspora women to join the Israelis.

The women from Pittsburgh joined Jewish women from Germany, Argentina, New Zealand, South Africa and Miami in a week long caravan through the rocky roads of the Negev Desert.

Before the Pittsburgh group left, they composed a song about the event using the melody from ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” — which will now be stuck in your head all day, sorry — called, of course, “Desert Queen.” It became a big hit during the expedition — disco being popular everywhere — as seen here:
