Will France ban female Muslim clothing?
Monday, January 25, 2010 at 2:51PM France may become a less friendly place for traditional Muslims this week, as lawmakers are expected to discuss creating a ban on burqas, the full-body-covering garment often adorned by Muslim women, reports CNN.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy first made waves with the threat back in June, when he said that burqas were "not welcome" in France, but now it looks like those two little words may create big changes. Though reportedly under 2,000 women regularly wear burqas in France, the country's Muslim population is about 3.5 million—6 percent of the country.
If the possible legislation goes into action, a seemingly integral part of these women's religious and cultural lives will be altered. Do you think it's fair for the French government to ban burqas? Let us know what you think below.
