Rabbi Danny SchiffThe much admired Rabbi Danny Schiff, who made aliyah with his family this summer after 17 years in Pittsburgh, is coming back to town in two weeks and is planning a busy schedule of classes, lectures and programs while he's here.
Schiff, who was the Agency for Jewish Learning community scholar, will be in Pittsburgh the week of Nov. 16.
The centerpiece of the visit are a pair of community lectures where Schiff will talk about his personal experiences in Israel. The first is Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Rodef Shalom. The second is Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center.
Schiff will also hold classes throughout the week.
In morning sessions at the AJL on Monday, Nov. 16 and Wednesday, Nov. 18 , Schiff will offer a class on Online Judaism, "focusing on the Internet and the range of ethical challenges that are now being confronted as a result of the implosion of modern technology." On Monday and Wednesday evening, also at the AJL, Schiff will "provide a text based analysis of the Torah portion, Vayatzei and what contemporary Jews need to know."
There is a fee for both of those two-day classes.
On Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the Allegheny County Bar Association, Schiff will lead a program from CLE credits called “Why Jewish Law Matters." On Thursday, Nov. 19 at Marcus and Shapira downtown, Schiff will talk about the 365 Negative Commandments. There is a cost for that downtown program, as well.
